Computation method
Method type: formula
Compute the absolute shortest angular separation between the Sun and Guru or Shukra and compare it with the maintained strict combustion threshold.
Process
- Select threshold 11 degrees for Guru or 10 degrees for Shukra.
- Normalize planet-Sun difference onto the signed shortest arc and take its absolute value in 0-180 degrees.
- Set combust=true only when separation is strictly less than the threshold.
- Return graha, separation, flag, and threshold.
Formulae
Shortest-arc combustion
d = abs((planet - sun + 180) mod 360 - 180)
combust = d < threshold[graha]- d: shortest angular separation
- threshold: Guru 11 degrees; Shukra 10 degrees
Worked example
Illustrative Guru conjunction
Inputs
- Sun longitude: 100 degrees
- Guru longitude: 109 degrees
- Guru threshold: 11 degrees
Calculation
- d=abs((109-100+180) modulo 360 - 180)=9 degrees.
- 9 < 11.
Result
- elongation_deg=9; combust=true; threshold_deg=11
Method notes
- Equality is not combust because comparison is strict.
- Surya Siddhanta and Vakya do not populate outer-planet Maudhya fields.

Verification states: needs_locator
Numerical behavior is tested; exact threshold locators remain under derived-classification debt.

Scope: Special Yogas, Panchaka labels, Khara month, Pitru Paksha, Simha-Stha, Maudhya, Anandadi Yoga, Disha Shoola, Nakshatra Mukha and Panchaka Rahita are separate traditional classifications. The group exists to expose evidence debt and grants no umbrella textual authority; each component needs its own inspected rule table and regional boundary.
